Here’s some news that makes my heart go pitter-patter. According to Hip Hop Blog.com, New York-based alt hip-hop Digable Planets have announced plans to reunite, presumably in 2012. Butterfly, LadyBug Mecca and Cee Knowledge (formerly Doodlebug) are planning a tour and, dare I say, a comeback album. The trio took hip-hop (and music) by storm in 1993 with the release of the debut album Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space). Infusing hip-hop and jazz into a laid back, funky vibe endeared the group to fans and critics alike. But sadly, Digable Planets broke up after the release of sophomore album Blowout Comb, yet another critically-acclaimed album. And while the members haven’t recorded together since the mid-90’s, each of one has continued to make a mark on music. Cee Knowledge has been recording and touring with Cosmic Funk Orchestra. Ladybug Mecca has released solo projects (check out her Trip the Light Fantastic) and collaborations with other artists. And Butterfly, well he has been recording under the monicker Shabazz Palaces and is currently riding the wave of his latest release Black Up. (expect to see Shabazz Palaces’ Black Up on a number of ‘Best of’ lists for the year.
Stay tuned for additional details about the reunion. As we wait in anticipation, let’s take a walk down memory lane with the tune that started it all.
