Last night, Idle Warship hit Atlanta and there was nothing but excitement in the air. The duo, comprised of rapper Talib Kweli and singer Res, performed for little over an hour, delivering a powerhouse set. Backed by a 4 member band, Idle Warship got things started with “Enemy”, the high octane lead track from the album Habits of the Heart, which set the tone for the entire show. Throughout the evening, Idle Warship performed a number of the albums songs, but the crowd was also graced with covers of songs by Iggy and the Stooges, as well as Fela Kuti. Since both Kweli and Res have solid followings as solo artists, they had to treat the fans, don’t you think? Res performed a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”, which will be one of the tracks on her upcoming EP, tentatively titled Refried Mac. (a sampling of some of Res’ favorite Fleetwood Mac songs.) Talib Kweli did an a cappella version of “Distractions”, a tune from his upcoming solo album. It was red hot…dare I say better than the studio version. And the band. That band was incredible. Idle Warship closed the set with fan favorite “Laser Beams”, which was the perfect ending to a great show. I believe that the tour is winding down, but if you get an opportunity to catch Idle Warship live, you may want to jump on that.
