Happy Tuesday to you, my fellow musicheads. We’re halfway through the month of May and the new releases keep coming. This week, we have have new music from country and rock legends, a critically-acclaimed former reality show contestant, and a hip-hop starlet on the rise. There has been a huge buzz around rapper Rye Rye since 2006 when her first single became a club hit. Now, the 21-year old artist has released her debut album Go! Pop! Bang!, which had been delayed for three years. Even with this delay, Rye Rye comes out with a bang. With production credits by The Neptunes and Bangladesh, as well as help from M.I.A., Akon, and Robyn, Go! Pop! Bang! may be that album that folks are banging all summer. No doubt the veteran on this week’s list, at 79, Willie Nelson drops his latest effort, Heroes, today. In large measure, the album consists mostly of collaborations with some likely (and not so likely) artists, such as Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joe Shaver and more. There’s no stopping the “red-headed stranger. Also out this week is new music from Santana, Adam Lambert, Beach House, Best Coast, Cherri Bomb, [...]

We’re winding down the month of April and there’s music, music everywhere. If you didn’t break your piggy bank purchasing all of those goodies during Record Store Day this past Saturday, you may want to check out this week’s list of new releases. More musical treats for you to consider This week, we have a few releases that I’ve put in the ‘finally’ category, meaning there are a couple of releases that are finally available. The first is Jamiroquai’s Rock Dust Light Star. Fans in the U.S. have been wondering why the album was released 17 months ago around the globe, but we’re just getting it here. Well, better late than never. The video for the album’s first single “White Knuckle Ride” was released in January 2011 and seemed to serve as a bit of a teaser for what was to come on the album. The funky, dance music that we’ve all come to know and love from Jamiroquai is still evident and it appears that the group hasn’t missed a beat. Go ahead and give it a listen. The second release that I’ve been patiently anticipating is the self-titled album from Malaysian singer Yuna. After hearing the album’s [...]

Hey there, musicheads. My favorite day of the week has come around again. You may not be familiar with many of the artists on this week’s list, but don’t let that stop you from exploring what they have to offer. A lot of great stuff here for you music connoisseurs. Yann Tiersen releases his seventh studio album today entitled Skyline. According to Tiersen, his latest album is darker (lyrically) than his previous release Dust Lane. “My plan was also to play with contrast between electric and quite dense parts and more sober and minimal quiet parts including piano and strings,” says Tiersen. This ‘contrast’ to which he prefers, makes for some very exciting music, making this one of my top picks of the week. Also out this week is new music from Chris Botti, Butterfly Boucher, Maya Jane Coles, Cowboy Junkies, Dragonforce, Dry the River, Future, Grinderman, Eric Hutchinson, Jack Johnson, Lightships, Maps & Atlases, Bob Marley, Moonface, Jason Mraz, Neon Trees, Our Lady Peace, SWV, Train, Dar Williams, and Hank Williams III. Hit up your local music shop or online retailer and get yourself some new music. Before you do, take a moment to view the latest [...]

Welcome to another exciting day of new music releases. In this week’s crop of new music, we have veteran rockers, Grammy-winning jazz artist, an uber-talented Malian duo, and so much more. One of today’s highly anticipated releases is the debut album from Alabama Shakes. The quartet has garnered quite the following recently with its blend of blues and southern rock. World Party is back with Arkeology, a box set that includes five new songs and a series live performances and covers. (I admit that I’m partial to the live version of “Ship of Fools”.) Additional new releases out this week come from Mali-based couple Amadou & Miriam, Tim Barry, Bassnectar, Black Dice, Neal Casal, Counting Crows, Dead Sara, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, Halestorm, Mickey Hart, Hawthorne Headhunters, Imaginary Cities, Lords Of Acid, M Ward, Monica, Municipal Waste, Prince Royce, rocker Bonnie Raitt, Sleepy Sun, Taproot, Trampled By Turtles, Lissy Trullie, and American Idol alum Elliott Yamin. As you’re contemplating which new releases to add to your collection, take a moment to watch videos of the latest songs from Alabama Shakes, Sleepy Sun, and Lissy Trullie. Other Articles of Interest New Release Tuesday – May 8, 2012 New Release Tuesday [...]

It is hard to believe but we’re in April. The first three months gave us some amazing new music from such varied artists as Carolina Chocolate Drops, Matthew Dear, The Ting Tings, Robert Glasper, Anoushka Shankar, Miike Snow, Paul Weller, Eric Lau, Brother Ali, Birdy, and many, many more. That was just the beginning. As we enter the second quarter of the year, the great music just keeps on coming. This week check out new releases from Willis Earl Beal, Breton, Candlebox, CeU, Clark, Elvis Costello, De La Soul, Joy Denalane, Dr John, Futureheads, Great Lake Swimmers, The Lumineers, MxPx, Nicki Minaj, Obie Trice, Of Monsters & Men, Morgan Page, Photek, Quantic & Alice Russell, Rascal Flatts, Marvin Sapp and Paul Van Dyk. Of all of this week’s new releases, Willis Earl Beal’s album Acousmatic Sorcery is one of the more interesting CD packages out this week. The album comes with a book that was written and illustrated by Beal and is titled Principles of a Protagonist. What a novel idea. (really, no pun intended) Hear a bit of Willis Earl Beal, as well as Joy Denalane and Of Monsters & Men by viewing their latest videos below. Happy listening. [...]

They’ve been making great music for decades and still sound as good as they ever have. Do you fancy a bit of hip hop?
It’s Spring Again! New season, new music. Let’s get things started with the much anticipated album from the lovely and talented Esperanza Spalding. Her fourth album, Radio Music Society is her first since her delightfully, unexpected win as Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammy Awards. On this album, the multi-instrumentalist presents a number of jazz flavors, from straight ahead to more progressive tunes. Spalding’s angelic voice has such clarity and proves to be a blissful compliment to her intricate stylings on bass, which makes for a pleasurable album. She has also enlisted some of the industry’s most talented artists: musicians Wayne Shorter, Jack De Johnette, Billy Hart, as well as vocalists Lalah Hathaway and Algebra Blessett and a little production help from Q-Tip. All in a day’s work, right? There are a number of terrific songs on the album, such as “Smile Like That”, “Let Her”, and Spalding’s take on Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Help It” which features saxophonist Joe Lovano. Outstanding. Also out this week are new albums from The Shins, Casey James, Melanie Fiona, Odd Future, Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s, Brad Mehldau, Diggy, Tanlines, Anti-Flag, Lost in the Trees, Unsane, The Grascals, Anoushka [...]

Welcome to another New Release Tuesday. Lots of new music to explore. One of this week’s standouts come from Caetano Veloso & David Byrne. The two artists, who’ve frequently collaborated over the years, came together for a special Live at Carnegie Hall performance in 2004. Eight years later, that performance is now available on CD … and it sounds great. There is a nice mix of Veloso and Byrne songs (including a few Talking Heads songs), but I’d have to say that my favorites are “Você é Linda” and “Nothing But Flowers”. If you’re a fan of either artist or just interested in new music, this may be for you. Other new music out this week from Dave Barnes, Cannibal Corpse, Delta Spirit, Demdike Stare, Elisa, Freshman 15, Hands Like Houses, Vijay Iyer, Shooter Jennings, Lucero, Janiva Magness , Anya Marina, Meat Loaf, Say Anything, Soulfly, Ruben Studdard, The Ting Tings, VCMG and Peter White. If blues or country is your thing, then you’ll definitely want to check out the video spotlight of this week’s releases. Shooter Jennings shows us how much of a ‘Family Man’ (pun intended) he is with the new video for his single “The Deed and [...]
