Donna Summer, the “Queen of Disco”, has succumbed to cancer. I am stunned and saddened by this news. Since I heard the news this morning, I’ve been grappling with this loss and reflecting on her career. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, Donna Summer came to prominence in the 1970’s, as discos were gaining more prominence throughout the U.S. She partnered with producer Giorgio Moroder and created the sound that would take music by storm. In 1975, Summer’s first hit, “Love to Love You Baby”, was groundbreaking. The song’s original running time is nearly 17 minutes and the lyrics and tone are overtly sexual, which was perfect for play at discos. The song did so well in clubs that it eventually got consistent radio play and eventually led to the first of many chart-topping hits. I was just a kid at the time, but I clearly remember Donna Summer ruling the airwaves. She released albums each year from 1975 – 1978, often releasing two albums a year. She literally had hit after hit after hit. “Try Me, I Know We Can Make It,” “Spring Affair,” “I Feel Love,” “Last Dance” and many more. With the release of her album Bad Girls [...]

Well, I no longer harbor ill feelings toward Josh Tillman for leaving Fleet Foxes last year. Not with him giving us such great music as Father John Misty. His first album under this new monicker is Fear Fun and the title alone would pique the interest of any would be listener. Yet, we’re also given some really great music and equally interesting music videos, like this and this. Father John Misty’s latest video for “This is Sally Hatchet” is dark, twisted, and perhaps a wee bit comical. It’ll definitely have you look at pizza parlors in a different light moving forward. If this isn’t enough for you, why not go ahead and make plans to catch Father John Misty in concert this month. I have no doubt that it will be a treat.
Happy Tuesday to you, my fellow musicheads. We’re halfway through the month of May and the new releases keep coming. This week, we have have new music from country and rock legends, a critically-acclaimed former reality show contestant, and a hip-hop starlet on the rise. There has been a huge buzz around rapper Rye Rye since 2006 when her first single became a club hit. Now, the 21-year old artist has released her debut album Go! Pop! Bang!, which had been delayed for three years. Even with this delay, Rye Rye comes out with a bang. With production credits by The Neptunes and Bangladesh, as well as help from M.I.A., Akon, and Robyn, Go! Pop! Bang! may be that album that folks are banging all summer. No doubt the veteran on this week’s list, at 79, Willie Nelson drops his latest effort, Heroes, today. In large measure, the album consists mostly of collaborations with some likely (and not so likely) artists, such as Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joe Shaver and more. There’s no stopping the “red-headed stranger. Also out this week is new music from Santana, Adam Lambert, Beach House, Best Coast, Cherri Bomb, [...]

Less than a month after the close of this year’s two-weekend, hologram-filled revelry, Coachella Music Festival organizers have announced plans for 2013. Apparently, extending Coachella to two consecutive weekends has proven so successful that there will be a repeat next year. The festival will take place April 12-14 and then again April 19-21. One significant change that has caused some murmuring amongst fans is the fact that the ticket price has gone up to $349, including all fees. While the general ticket sale will take place in early 2013, the Coachella Purchase Plan is back. From Thursday, May 17th at 10am PDT until 10pm Thursday, May 24th, fans will be able to put a 20% deposit down on tickets and pay the balance over 7 months.
Carolina Chocolate Drops continue to gain momentum after the February release of the most recent album Leaving Eden. Last week, the group released a video for the single “Country Girl” which has quickly become a fan favorite on CMT. Rhiannon Giddens sings about her wonderful memories of country living in the south (Red clay, biscuits and gravy, running amongst oak trees), looking absolutely stunning. A nice homage, indeed.
When I think about the music artists that have influenced me the most through the years, British pop band The Style Council is firmly entrenched in my Top 5. Formed by Paul Weller (The Jam) and Mick Talbot (Dexy’s Midnight Runners), The Style Council embodied what I felt were the key elements of a great band – heartfelt lyrics and catchy music. While the group saw its greatest success with the 1984 release of the single “My Ever Changing Moods” (from the album of the same name), it is the sophomore release Internationalists (titled Our Favourite Shop outside of the U.S.) that was the catalyst for my life-long love affair with The Style Council. Let me say that I’m not sure how many people realize what a tremendous songwriter Paul Weller is. I don’t know if I’ve connected with other songwriters the way that I have with Weller, and that includes his work with The Style Council, as well as The Jam and his solo stuff. Internationalists is probably the best example of this. The range of topics in the songs speaks to some very deep personal, social, and political issues. “A Man of Great Promise” has Weller dealing with [...]

Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz, The Good, the Bad and the Queen, etc.) has released his latest project entitled Dr Dee, which is the soundtrack for an opera based on the life of scientist John Dee.
My heart has been heavy since hearing about the death of Beastie Boys co-founder Adam “MCA” Yauch. I remember being excited several months back when it was announced that Beastie Boys were to be inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I felt that it was much deserved and it would be an opportunity to see the band perform live for the first time in years. Unfortunately, Yauch wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, and I became concerned. I knew that he had been battling cancer for a few years, but his outlook was so positive that I was sure that he’d be fine. Sadly, people worldwide are mourning his death. As I think back on the career of the hip-hop trio, it was Yauch that always stood out to me. I remember listening to Paul’s Boutique and realizing that his raspy voice had become one of the most identifiable voices in hip-hop. (Chuck D, LL, Rakim, Heavy D, MCA) His sound was authentic. As the years passed, I realized that the Beastie Boys had been evolving…the music, the rhymes, the antics. I was a cursory listener when Licensed to Ill came out. (Although “Hold It Now, Hit [...]
