I’m enjoying the recent rash of animated music videos that have been released. My new favorite comes from singer M. Ward. “The First Time I Ran Away” is off of his upcoming album titled A Wasteland Companion, and it is simply beautiful. (I’m referring to both the video and the song.) It is soothing, yet touchy. The imagery is simplistic and effective. M. Ward’s album is scheduled for release via Merge Records on April 10th, a day before he kicks off his North American tour, which should be a treat. What do you think about this lovely new video? Other Articles of Interest VIDEO: “The First Time I Ran Away” – M.
The early-mid 1980’s saw a second British Invasion (of sorts) of new romantic, synth-pop bands. One of the bands that made up this movement is China Crisis. The band formed in 1979 and had some success in the UK with its first two albums, which were more dance-oriented. But the group’s most critically-acclaimed and successful album is the third release, Flaunt the Imperfection. This album is mellower than previous albums (it is more akin to pop-rock) and has a more cohesive sound. This new, smoother sound can be attributed to bringing Walter Becker (one-half of Steely Dan) on board as producer. This is more than likely the grounding force that China Crisis needed in order to open their sound to a broader audience, which worked quite nicely. (Vocals aside, the single “You Did Cut Me” sounds as if it could have easily been a Steely Dan tune circa 1977.) Lyrically, the songs on Flaunt the Imperfection are much more interesting and compelling than previous work. (See “Black Man Ray” and “Gift of Freedom”.) It is clear that band members Garry Daly and Eddie Lundon had something significant to say. The melodies are lovely and the song arrangement is well done. [...]

He’s coming back. The Mod Father himself, Paul Weller, has announced a North American tour this Spring, which consists of only two shows. Weller will be performing at New York City’s Best Buy Theater in Times Square on May 18th and 19th. This will be the only opportunity that American fans will have to see him perform songs from his upcoming album Sonik Kicks. For those fans that order tickets through Ticketmaster, they will also be given a chance to pre-order Weller’s new CD (or LP) with each ticket order. I caught Weller’s 2010 tour at this same venue and it was pure sonic pleasure. If you’re a fan, you won’t want to miss this show. Tickets go on sale at noon Friday, February 3rd via the Best Buy Theater box office or at Ticketmaster. For a sample of what’s to come on the Sonik Kicks album, take a listen to the first single, “Around the Lake”. The tune is currently available on iTunes. Other Articles of Interest Paul Weller Is Heading Back To The U.S…For 2 Shows Eleanor Friedberger Gets Heaven-ly And Gears Up For Tour New Album And Tour For Islands Radiohead To [...]

This morning, I woke up prayerful and grateful for all that I have. Immediately thereafter, I learned that Soul Train creator and music legend Don Cornelius had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I sat in stunned silence for a long time. I was instantly filled with great loss, as if I’d lost a cherished friend, and in many ways, I had. As with so many youth at that time, Don Cornelius played an integral part in our formative years, and beyond. As a child, I loved music. More than toys, more than cartoons, and more than playtime outdoors. Every Saturday morning, I would prop down in front of the television to watch the latest installment of the “hippest trip in America” – Soul Train. This was my must-see tv. From the moment each episode began, it was clear that Cornelius would present 60 mind-blowing minutes of the latest and greatest in R&B, Soul and Dance music. He had a commanding presence and a booming voice. He had my undivided attention. This was his show, and I loved every moment. He entertained, informed, and moved me. I learned how to dance watching Soul Train. I got fashion tips from the [...]

One of my favorite new releases of the year (so far) comes from vocal-pop artist Elizaveta. Her debut album Beatrix Runs is poetic and enthralling. The album’s lead track, “Dreamer”, is engaging and highlights the vocal range of the classically trained vocalist. So how fitting that she would release a music video that is as beautiful and enchanting as her voice. Other Articles of Interest VIDEO: “The First Time I Ran Away” – M.
