Less than a month after the close of this year’s two-weekend, hologram-filled revelry, Coachella Music Festival organizers have announced plans for 2013. Apparently, extending Coachella to two consecutive weekends has proven so successful that there will be a repeat next year. The festival will take place April 12-14 and then again April 19-21. One significant change that has caused some murmuring amongst fans is the fact that the ticket price has gone up to $349, including all fees. While the general ticket sale will take place in early 2013, the Coachella Purchase Plan is back. From Thursday, May 17th at 10am PDT until 10pm Thursday, May 24th, fans will be able to put a 20% deposit down on tickets and pay the balance over 7 months.
Poet, musician, activist, critical thinker. All words that I would use to describe Gil Scott-Heron. Sadly, he left us yesterday after 62 years on this earth. I struggle to find the words to adequately convey the power and importance of his legacy. It is far too massive to constrain to this post. His words and music are such that one cannot be a cursory listener. Your undivided attention is required, because trust me, the lyrics hit you like a 1 – 2 punch. His observations were always right on point. My earliest memory of him was in the late 1970s. My uncles were big music fans, especially of musicians who made them think. Enter one Gil Scott-Heron. In 1978, he released the single “Angel Dust”. I was hiding in the back of the room, dying to hear this song that my uncles were discussing. I was young and didn’t really understand the lyrical content, but I did understand what I felt when I heard his voice. I was fearful and concerned…I could sense that the song was serious. I was sad for the family referenced in the song. Dying, funerals, “dusting”. It was too much for me, but I couldn’t [...]

The lineup for the 2011 Coachella Music Festival has been announced and it is big! This year’s 3-day music and arts festival will be headlined by Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, and Kanye West, respectively. I found myself salivating as I read through the broader lineup up artists: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Erykah Badu, Big Audio Dynamite, The Black Keys, City and Colour, The Chemical Brothers, Chromeo, Cut Copy, Death from Above 1979, Duran Duran, Elbow, Foals, Cee Lo Green, London Suede, Marina and the Diamonds, Mount Kimble, Phosphorescent, Robyn, Rye Rye, Raphael Saadiq, Shpongle, Sleigh Bells (second straight year) The Strokes, Titus Andronicus, Twin Shadow, and Yelle and many more. If you’re even remotely interested in heading out to Indio, CA for Coachella, make sure that you purchase tickets when they go on sale this Friday, January 21 at 10:00 am PST. If 2010 is any indication, the tickets will sell out. Visit Coachella.com for additional festival information.
It has been a few days, but I’m still flying high from my first (and hopefully not last) Coachella experience. By now, everyone knows that it was a sold-out festival, posting record attendance. I’m not big on crowds, so knowing that the event was sold out before I even showed up made me a bit skittish. Yet, it wasn’t so bad. I’m such a music fiend that the opportunity to see an array of amazing bands far outweighed any inconvenience of being amongst a massive group of people. So, as a newbie, I’m going to provide my thoughts on the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the Coachella Music Festival. THE GOOD Performances. I was blown away blown away by the number of outstanding performances I witnessed over the weekend. Gorillaz, Jay-Z, Thom Yorke (Atoms for Peace), Florence and the Machine, B.O.B., Gossip, Dirty Projectors, La Roux, Little Dragon, Sleigh Bells, Hot Chip, Calle 13 and countless others. Fans. While there were many in attendance who were there for the festival “experience”, the lion’s share of people were music fans. Whether they were musicheads (like myself) or loyal fans of one or two artists, they were into the music, [...]
