Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter/composer Cole Williams is a musical force. She’s been honing her craft for years, making a name for herself domestically and in Europe. As she readies for the release of her limited-edition, double EP Out of the Basement, Out of the Box (out on May 8th), Williams spoke with Aural Notes about pursuing music as a career, performing, and connecting with fans. HOW DID THE JOURNEY OF COLE WILLIAMS BEGIN? I started playing piano when I was four and started singing in church when I was about eight or nine. I didn’t really know that I’d be singing [professionally] until I was about 18. I went to school and was majoring in Psychology and realized that it was so boring to me. After that, I took a semester off that turned into a couple of years and I just pursued music full-time. I started writing and getting into the studio… it was just a lot of baby steps. Later on, I went back to school because I wanted to learn the craft of singing. I got into the technique and being able to write voicings and just got another side of music that I wasn’t exposed to [...]

Oakland-based singer-songwriter Danielle Dubois is a passionate musician who has traveled the world on her quest to explore the origins and sounds that have influenced the music that she loves. After many years (and miles) of honing her craft, Dubois is in her native Oakland making music that draws from her experiences and influences. She recently chatted with Aural Notes about how she got her start, her adventures in Senegal, and her plans for 2012. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? I actually came to music through my brother Ben. He had a jazz vocal teacher, Jesse Foster, who I was introduced to at 16. There was an open mic at Café Internationale in San Francisco and I tagged along. I began working with Jesse and found myself heavily influenced by Ella [Fitzgerald], Etta [James] and Billie [Holiday]. Soon thereafter, I began performing in several Bay Area clubs, such as Paradise Lounge and Silverado Country Club. Working with Jesse opened the door to so many musical styles. He introduced me to Brazilian jazz via American jazz. After working with him for two years, I went to Brazil to explore the jazz scene even further. I was [...]

At this time of year, many are publishing their lists of the top recordings of the year. Those top 10, 20 50, or even 100 recordings that rose to the top of. Well, we have our own list. But it is a list of the top recordings you may have missed this year. Mind Bokeh – BIBIO Mind Bokeh is the sixth studio album from British electronic musician Bibio. The album was released back in the spring and has remained in heavy rotation all year. It is a mélange of interesting beats and sounds. A fun, eclectic musical ride. Recommended Track: “Light Seep” Bibio – Light Seep All in My Mind – I, CED This is the R&B album that needed to be made this year. St. Louis’ I, Ced is a producer/musician who truly put his heart and soul in this recording. Beautiful. Endearing. Layered. Addictive. All very accurate words to describe this album. This is for savvy music listeners. It is the subtle nuances in the music that make this an amazing recording. Recommended Track: “All in My Mind” The Abandoned Lullaby – ICEBIRD Icebird is a collaboration between hip-hop producer/musician and vocalist Aaron Livingston. The Abandoned [...]

Well, in case you haven’t heard, British songstress Adele has a new album out today. Her sophomore album, 21, has been generating buzz for months and has been one of the most anticipated albums of the year. It has been nearly three years since the release of her debut album, 19, and since then Adele has garnered a steady following. “Rolling In The Deep“, the first single from the new album, was released a few months ago and has caught on like wildfire, and with her next single “Someone Like You” burning up the internet, I’m certain that this release is no sophomore slump. Coming off of the heels of last week’s Grammy telecast, some industry vets have gone as far to say that Adele will be a contender at next year. I think that they’re right. You can also find new music out today from Bayside, Builders & Butchers, Cave Singers, Diplo, D.R.U.G.S., G Love, The Low Anthem, Brad Mehldau, Joel Ortiz, Sean Rowe, Gil Scott-Heron/Jamie XX, and Toro Y Moi. Underneath the Pine is the sophomore release from South Carolina’s Toro y Moi (Chaz Bundick). This has become one of my favorite artists to listen to over [...]

Each year, I often hear many people snarking that they can’t be bothered to watch the Grammy Awards because either the music is “crap” or they don’t believe in awards or it’s a big waste of time. Well, for all of the complaining that I hear each year, someone tuned in to this year’s telecast. The 2011 Grammy Awards boasted its highest viewership in 10 years. I watched the telecast in its entirety, which is something I haven’t done in nearly seven years. (I usually bounce in and out, listening out for key awards.) While I watched, it dawned on me that the show was really a big concert with just a few intermissions. There was a total of just nine awards handed out during the 3.5 hour telecast. (Gone are the days where 6 – 7 awards were handed out per hour…at a minimum.) Pulling in the right artists to perform is definitely enough to keep eyeballs tuned in for a lengthy program. During the course of the show (and the pre-telecast), I found myself compiling a good, bad, and ugly list, and I thought I’d share it with you. GOOD The Aretha Franklin tribute with Yolanda Adams, Christina [...]

It has been a few days, but I’m still flying high from my first (and hopefully not last) Coachella experience. By now, everyone knows that it was a sold-out festival, posting record attendance. I’m not big on crowds, so knowing that the event was sold out before I even showed up made me a bit skittish. Yet, it wasn’t so bad. I’m such a music fiend that the opportunity to see an array of amazing bands far outweighed any inconvenience of being amongst a massive group of people. So, as a newbie, I’m going to provide my thoughts on the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the Coachella Music Festival. THE GOOD Performances. I was blown away blown away by the number of outstanding performances I witnessed over the weekend. Gorillaz, Jay-Z, Thom Yorke (Atoms for Peace), Florence and the Machine, B.O.B., Gossip, Dirty Projectors, La Roux, Little Dragon, Sleigh Bells, Hot Chip, Calle 13 and countless others. Fans. While there were many in attendance who were there for the festival “experience”, the lion’s share of people were music fans. Whether they were musicheads (like myself) or loyal fans of one or two artists, they were into the music, [...]
